Foul Language as a part of today's Dialect or Diction
Language has been changing since ages, and the language used today is a lot more different than what it was in the past. Most people admit the fact that English language is going on a wrong or bad journey, but it is generally assumed that we cannot by conscious action do anything about it. Profanity, which means a word or expression which is usually rude, vulgar, insulting is used by almost everyone as if it is their native language. This has become like a universally used language and people nowadays don’t hesitate to use foul languages in public. The English language is in a state that it becomes ugly and in accurate because our thoughts are foolish, but the slovenliness of our language makes it easier for us to have foolish thoughts. Thus, it is true that foul words are a part of people’s everyday dialect and diction.
Preteens and teens today seem to replace every second word with a swear word. Teenagers today usually use foul words to act cool or to be accepted in their so called ‘hood’ (neighborhood). As everybody in a group or ‘hood’ uses foul language, a teenager may be compelled to use such language in order to fit in. Teenagers may use foul language to cover their own ignorance of the fact that they have no moral compassion for the other around them in public and consider them to be adults. Some use foul words without knowing its meaning, but some teenagers are well aware of the meaning of the word and the impact they have. So, why are they using it? The answer may be because teenagers have developed this into a habit which is difficult to remove or they don’t want it removed. They even prefer to wear T- shirts with profanity stamped on them.
Foul language seems pervasive among today’s kids. Kids hear it on the TV, they hear it everywhere. Music and movies of this day contain enough foul language for the child to copy it, and if you hear a kid singing a song with all those ‘F’ words, u should not be surprised. Kids keep parroting their parents, and if a parent uses profanity in front of his child, then no other can be blamed but the parent himself. Gaining peer acceptance is another reason for its usage from kids. Children nowadays use foul language to prove independence, by trying to prove they are separate from you and that you do not control everything about them. They use swear words as a way of attracting attention as those foul words have shock value and they get immediate response from adults. If you listen to a conversation between two young Muslim kids, you will hear expletives, bad words and cusses. In fact, foul language is often heard as a part of their everyday life.
Before using foul language you should know your audience first. There is a saying that “from the overflow of one’s heart, the mouth is speaking.” Unfortunately, in the case of foul language, it pollutes those around. The use of racially abusive language on television and radio is an area of increasing concern among viewers and listeners, a new study has revealed. People use such language wherever or whenever they feel like using it without thinking about the impact it will have on those listening to them. For example, in public like in the NBA the camera often turns to spectators using foul languages to the opponent teams, coaches shouting at the players of referee. The great lack of control and disregard for the public is evident. The problem is that people have accepted more and more of this kind of behavior. However, it is glad to know that not all people are like this. A large number of people are offended by these filths and in some places it is still considered a taboo.
You do not need to go far to get an education in obscenity these days. Try a walk to a basketball court, where you are likely to find a group of teenagers enjoying a friendly match, liberally seasoned with the ‘F’ word, plus a sprinkling of other, garden variety, four letter words. Freedom of speech can be valid but think of how mangled our language can get if we have people cussing whenever they want. It is simply matter of politeness, we as individuals make choices of words. We can improve through more careful choice of words and can control the pollution by decreasing the smokes and harmful gases of the ‘F – bombs ‘.
